Recovery is where training actually pays off, and protein is the raw material your body uses to repair muscle after exercise. The good news is that the science is simpler than most marketing suggests.
How much do you need?
General research points to roughly 1.4 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for people who train regularly. Total daily intake matters far more than any single shake.
Does timing matter?
The idea of a narrow "anabolic window" right after a workout has been overstated. Spreading protein across the day in three to five servings appears more useful than obsessing over the thirty minutes after training.
Whole food or powder?
- Whole foods bring extra nutrients and keep you full.
- Powders are convenient when appetite or schedule makes whole meals hard.
- Both count toward your daily total; neither is magic on its own.
Sleep, hydration and progressive training still do most of the heavy lifting for recovery. Protein supports the process; it does not replace the fundamentals.
